Carbon Farming Field Trip

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Learn the science and practice of how carbon is currently being captured in California soils, and its potential to restore balance within the carbon cycle in a way that will ameliorate climate change. Gain practical and hands-on knowledge around how your business or institution can support the implementation of Carbon Farming.

ITINERARY:
Join dozens of business leaders as we learn about viable ways to bolster community resiliency and an alternative to traditional carbon offset programs.

9:00 am - Meet in Petaluma to depart for beautiful West Marin in a tour bus, and hear John Wick’s "Overview of Carbon 101" en route. (Parking is available from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Petaluma Fairgrounds parking lot where the Sonoma County Airporter departs. The tour bus will leave from the north east corner of the parking lot by Java Hut, 100 Fairgrounds Drive, Petaluma, CA 94952. MAP)

10:15 - 11:45 am - West Marin Compost Tour
Visit the iconic Lafranchi Dairy in Nicasio for a tour of West Marin Compost, the recipient of a USDA Grant to build a functioning composting business that cycles local waste streams into high-quality compost to be applied to Sonoma and Marin rangelands.

11:45 am - 12:15 pm - Tour bus to next location

12:15 - 1:45 pm - Locally-sourced open-air lunch and presentations
Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch while you learn from Dr. Jeffrey Creque, PhD, Director of Rangeland and Agroecosystem Management at the Carbon Cycle Institute and Marin Carbon Project, about the process for creating and implementing Carbon Farm Plans.

Fibershed founder, Rebecca Burgess, will share a business case study focused on textile corporations that are supporting carbon farming to secure their source of Climate Beneficial™ raw wool.

Torri Estrada, policy director for the Carbon Cycle Institute, and Calla Rose Ostrander, Director of Climate Change Initiatives for the Rathmann Family Foundation, will discuss options for scaling Carbon Farming through public and private supports.

1:45 - 3:00 pm - Stemple Creek Ranch Tour
Hear from rancher Loren Poncia, who implements a Carbon Farm Plan on his ranch and raises certified Climate Beneficial™ grass-fed beef.
